Stuffing for 8 Foot Sofa Pillows

The right stuffing makes large sofa cushions comfortable for daily use. Whether re-stuffing an old cushion or creating a new one, the stuffing plays a large roll in shape and comfort. The wrong stuffing can produce an uneven feel and appearance or leave the cushion flat. Consider the costs and the usage of the sofa when deciding on the right stuffing for the cushions.
  1. Polyfoam

    • Polyfoam, or polyurethane foam, is available in rolls or pre-cut sizes. For an 8-foot long sofa cushion, a roll may be the best option. The thick foam is springy and durable. It is soft enough for comfort but made to spring back into form when pressure is released. Since the foam will be one solid piece, it requires only sliding into an old cushion or being wrapped with material for a new one. The foam may purchased from an upholstery outlet or may be available for order through crafting stores. Inquire with a professional for the best cutting options.

    Cotton

    • Cotton filling may be used for stuffing any size sofa cushion, including a full-size, or 8-foot, singular seat or back. Unbleached cotton stuffing is available at crafting, sewing and upholstery outlets. This option is cost effective for those on a budget. Place the stuffing in by the handful. The cotton clings to itself and reforms clumps in the sofa. Press the cotton together for a tight fit in the cushion. It will crush down some when sat on. Cotton will not spring back, so over-stuffing slightly may be the best option.

    Tapped Rubber

    • A natural option for stuffing a large sofa cushion is a form of latex known as tapped rubber. Available in strips and in star-shaped balls, the substance springs back into place when pressure is removed. This creates a soft but shape-retaining stuffing for a large cushion. It is durable and biodegradable, an advantage for the environmentally conscious. The substance is available from upholstery stores and other natural-fiber outlets. The stuffing process is dependent on the form of tapped rubber you choose.

    Recycling Options

    • To save money and the environment, stuff large sofa cushions with recycled materials. Multiple old bed or throw pillows create a soft, comfortable new cushion when placed into new material. Fill in a casing of thin foam with newspaper to fluff up the cushion or use old clothing as a center. Old comforters are an option for an 8-foot sofa and they are made to fit long mattresses. Fold the comforters in two to double the stuffing. A comforter may also act as the soft interior lining for a large cushion stuffed with newspaper, shredded paper or old ripped-up material.
