How to Measure Whether a Sofa Will Fit for Moving

Moving time involves making decisions about which items will go to the new location and which ones will be sold, donated or discarded. This thought process works especially well for larger furniture items like a sofa, which may be too bulky for your moving truck or your new place. Before moving day arrives, determine the fate of your sofa by taking proper measurements.

Measure all angles of your sofa. Measure from the outside edge of one arm of the sofa to the outside edge of the other and from the front edge of one arm to the back of the sofa. Take measurements also from the top edge of the back of the sofa to the floor or from the top edge of the back of the sofa to the bottom edge of the sofa if the couch's legs can be removed.

    • 2

Measure the width and height of the doorways through which you will carry the sofa, as well as the width of any stairwell. Take measurements at your new location also. Measure the space available in the moving truck to ensure your sofa can fit.

    • 3

Measure the room at your new location where the sofa would be placed, and compare the measurements to the size of your sofa. If the sofa is too large for this room, check the measurements of other rooms, if available.

    • 4

Remove any cushions and detachable parts to reduce the weight and size of the sofa during the move. Turn the sofa to a position that simplifies maneuverability through the various openings. For instance, take the sofa out of the room sideways if the measurement from the front to the back is smaller than the width of the doorway, or turn it onto its back if the measurement from the top edge to the bottom edge is the smallest.
