How to Repair With Plywood When My Couch Is Sinking

Couches, no matter how well constructed, eventually begin to sink as a result of regular use. Over time, the weight of people sitting on the sofa causes its padding and springs to compress to the point that each component no longer expands. It can occur in one or more places on a couch and can be fixed without having to hire a professional furniture repair technician. All you need is plywood, foam padding a few other items.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the couch cushions and set them aside. Move the couch away from walls and/or other objects.

    • 2

Remove stitches from around the back and sides of the couch where the cushions normally would be placed. Use a stitch puller for that task. Pull the loose fabric toward you and let it hang over the front of the couch, giving you access to the couch's springs.

    • 3

Measure the sitting area of the couch with a tape measure. Mark the sitting area's measurement on a piece of plywood.

    • 4

Put on eye protection, and cut the plywood to fit the sitting area using a circular saw. Place the cut plywood on the sitting area.

    • 5

Cover the plywood with foam padding, and stretch the couch's fabric over the foam padding. Stitch the fabric back to the couch with a sewing needle and thread that matches the couch's fabric.

    • 6

Put the cushions back on the couch, and return the couch to its permanent location.
