How to Lift a Couch Off of the Floor

It is critical to know the proper lifting technique for heavy objects whether you are lifting your couch to clean the area around it or moving it to a new location, as the risk of back injury is high and can lead to chronic back pain. Having someone to help you move the couch is recommended to lighten the burden of moving the couch yourself and to reduce the risk of injury. If you are unable to lift the couch or have previous back issues, do not attempt to lift the furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove couch cushions and pillows to reduce the weight of the furniture.

    • 2

Put on thick gloves to protect your hands during the lifting process and wear non-slip shoes to prevent accidentally falling while holding the couch.

    • 3

Squat down and gently lift the bottom of the couch to test the weight of the couch.

    • 4

Stand up slowly while holding the bottom of the couch. Ask a friend to lift the opposite end of the couch to avoid back sprains.

    • 5

Hold the bottom of the couch and move it to the new location. Slowly squat down to the floor to set the couch down. The two of you must squat simultaneously to support the weight of the couch.
