How to Measure a Sectional Sofa's Dimensions from Side to Side

A sectional sofa may take up a large amount of space in a room with its multiple seating sections that fit together to form the couch. When you wish to determine the size of your furniture piece, measure a sectional sofa’s dimensions from side to side carefully. By measuring precisely, you can ascertain that the sectional sofa will fit in your interior space.

Instructions

  1. Inside Length

    • 1

Measure the inside seating area by placing the end of the tape measure at the inside edge of the left sofa arm.

    • 2

Extend the tape measure straight across the cushions toward the curve of the sofa.

    • 3

Continue measuring around the curve of the sofa with the tape measure to the inside edge of the right sofa arm or the edge of a chaise cushion piece.

    • 4

Note the measurement -- this is the seating dimension of the sectional sofa.

    Outside Length

    • 5

Measure the outside length by placing the end of the tape measure at the outside edge of the left arm at the back edge of the sofa.

    • 6

Extend the tape measure straight across the back of the sofa toward the opposite side. Note the point where the sofa curves to change directions. This is the length of one side of the sectional sofa.

    • 7

Reposition the end of the tape measure at the point you stopped measuring. Extend the tape measure around the curve toward the point where the sofa ends -- either the outside edge of the right arm or the edge of a chaise section. Note this length -- this is the length of the second side of the sectional sofa.

    • 8

Add the lengths of both sides to find the total outside length of the sectional sofa.
