How to Fix a Scuffed Couch with Shoe Polish

While a leather couch is usually very durable, it can become scuffed, especially when children or pets play on it. Having a scuffed leather couch refurbished professionally can cost hundreds of dollars, and it is rarely worthwhile, unless the couch is either very expensive or unusual. You can repair scuffs on a leather couch yourself using shoe polish. However, not all shoe polish can be used on furniture leather, as it is processed differently from shoe leather. Use a cream polish that is also labeled for use on smooth leather, and follow it up with leather conditioner.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the couch with a soft, clean cloth moistened in water. Allow the leather to air dry for an hour or so.

    • 2

Apply cream shoe polish that matches the color of the couch to the scuffed areas using a shoe polish applicator, which is a soft foam pad that is supplied with the polish or sold separately at shoe and shoe repair shops. Work it into the scuff with the applicator and wipe off excess cream with a soft, dry, clean cloth as you finish touching up a scuffed area.

    • 3

Buff each area with another soft, clean cloth after you wipe away any excess cream.

    • 4

Apply leather conditioner to the entire couch according to the instructions on the package as soon as you have touched up all of the scuffs. The leather conditioner protects the polished areas and evens out any minor differences in color between the original finish and the polish.
