Instructions

    • 1

Compare prices. You can choose to purchase each item in the "Things You'll Need" section individually or purchase a more convenient do-it-yourself leather recoloring kit from a furniture store or online retailer. If you only have a small leather piece to recover, rather than a whole set, you may save money by purchasing a kit.

    • 2

Contact the manufacturer of your couch and chair to determine what sort of leather was used to make your particular furniture. Recoloring dyes for leather are formulated to work on either leather or aniline leather, but the products are not interchangeable. An aniline leather couch must be recolored using an aniline leather recoloring kit, not a kit for recoloring regular leather.

    • 3

Calculate how much recoloring dye you need. To adequately cover and recolor a small chair, you need 8 ounces of dye. Recliners need 16 ounces, and couches require a full quart of dye.

    • 4

Wipe down your leather furniture, using leather cleaner and a soft towel or cloth.

    • 5

Spray on the dye in a light mist and smooth it over with a sponge to create an even layer. Let it dry for 15 minutes.

    • 6

Repeat until the brown is completely covered with black.

    • 7

Abstain from sitting on the couch for 24 hours so the color fully cures and adheres to your furniture.

    • 8

Work leather conditioner into the surface of the couch with a cloth, then wipe away excess. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.
