How to Make a Plain Tan Couch Pop

Incorporating colorful embellishments that match wall paint, decor, carpet or draperies can make your tan couch stand out while pulling the look of a room together. While tan is a neutral hue that can cause a couch to fade into the rest of the room, it also complements a number of colors. Avoid purchasing a new couch by enhancing your tan one, turning it from a plain furnishing into a focal point that pops when you enter the room.

Instructions

Decide on the look that you want your plain tan couch to achieve, such as classic, modern, Bohemian chic, eclectic, rustic or country. The style you choose should be in accordance with the style of the room and existing décor. Pick a color scheme based on the wall color and decorative items in the room.

    • 2

Purchase a combination of solid and damask or striped-patterned cream and black, blue and white or tan and dark brown pillows to create a classic look. Mix two bold colors of solid pillows, such as pink and lime green or light blue and yellow, and add patterned polka dot or paisley pillows in the same color scheme to define a modern look. Search for various shapes of pillows in fabrics such as velour that are embellished with fringe, beading and designs such as tapestry to emphasize an eclectic or Bohemian-chic look. Find checked, plaid or floral pillows in your color scheme to enhance a country or rustic décor.

Arrange oversized pillows against the back corners of the tan couch, with smaller pillows in front to draw the eye to the sides. This look does not interfere with artwork hanging above the middle point of the couch. Line same-size pillows diagonally against each other from one end of the couch to the other end, alternating colors or patterns to make the whole couch pop with color. Place one or two pillows in each corner and a rectangular or circular one in the middle of the couch to add minimal color and balance. Stack layers of different shapes and colors of pillows, with the largest pillows in back along the middle cushions to create depth, covering most of the tan and providing the most color.

Fold a throw blanket or quilt in half horizontally and place it over the center back area of the couch, or fold it in half lengthwise and place it vertically over one corner of the couch. Add a patterned throw if decorating with solid pillows and a solid throw if decorating with patterned pillows.

Add an area rug in front of your couch that picks up the colors or pattern of the accent pillows to draw the eye to the space that your couch is in. Place table lamps with shades that match the pillows on end tables located on both sides of the couch to complete the look.
