How to Make a Settee Out of a Twin Bed

When making a settee out of a twin bed, the bed will require little in the way of alteration if it is in new or good condition. Older beds may require replacement of some parts and some sprucing up before they develop an appearance suitable for receiving guests. By using a twin bed for your settee, you can save money over purchasing a new or full-size sofa, recycle pieces already in your possession and personally design the look of your finished piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Twin bed, day bed or futon
  • Paint or stain
  • Replacement hardware
  • Mattress
  • Plywood
  • Floor guards
  • Pillows
  • Material or bedding sets
  • Decorative pillows and throws

Instructions

    • 1

Use a twin-size futon if you prefer to create a sofa without arms. Use a twin bed or twin-size day bed that includes a headboard and footboard if you prefer to have a sofa with “arms” for support.

    • 2

Paint or stain the bed frame if it shows wear or does not match the look you hope to achieve. Replace any hardware that is worn or damaged.

    • 3

Replace the mattress if it has developed lumps or depressions from long-term use or if it has an odor. Remove any protective plastic covering to prevent the material you will use to cover your settee from sliding off and to prevent noise during use.

    • 4

Cut a piece of plywood to fit under the mattress if it settles in the middle, creating a depression that will be uncomfortable for seated guests or giving the settee a dented appearance.

    • 5

Place the bed against the wall of the room, allowing the wall to act as the back of the sofa. Lock the wheels, if the frame includes wheels. Add protective coverings that reduce sliding to the bottom of the wheels or feet if they might damage your flooring.

    • 6

Choose pillows in the number, size, thickness and density needed to fit around and against the headboard and footboard of the bed frame and against the wall to serve as supports.

    • 7

Select a material that matches the decor of your room and is large and durable enough to act as a cover for the piece. Cover only the mattress, which will become the seating of your settee. Allow the cover to loosely drape over any pillows you use to pad the arms of the sofa, or fit the material to the mattress and pillows, sewing it at the corners to hold it in place during use.

Use a bedding set as a covering for an easy fix; the duvet or comforter will provide extra cushioning and sets are available in attractive colors, patterns and textures. Purchase new bedding if your comforter or duvet and pillowcases are aged, stained, out of style or a poor match for the room’s decor.

Add pillows or throws to decorate the settee and for the comfort of users.
