How to Design a Room Around an Oversized Couch

An oversized couch offers an inviting place where you can stretch out fully to watch TV, cuddle with the kids on a rainy evening or collapse after a hectic day. Deciding where to place an oversized couch and how to work it into your current furniture arrangement may present a dilemma, though. When you bring your big, comfy couch home, rethink the design of your room and start from scratch to find the layout that works for you.

Move all the furniture out of your living room before you bring your new couch home. If you leave the furniture in its present position, it may be difficult for you to envision anything different. Remove tables, lamps and area rugs as well to create a blank canvas.

    • 2

Place furniture sliders underneath the legs of the couch and move it into different positions until you find your favorite spot. You may want to place it in front of a fireplace, in a central location where the TV is in easy view or under a bay or picture window.

    • 3

Determine the best placement for your television and entertainment center. The new, larger couch may block it from the view of those sitting on other furniture, depending on how you arrange your pieces. Ensure that the screen is visible from each piece of furniture except those placed in a quiet alcove and reserved for the bookworm of the family.

    • 4

Bring love seats, chairs and chaises back into the room one at a time. Place one or two chairs near the large couch to create an area that makes entertaining easy. Create other groupings of furniture with your additional pieces in another part of the room for intimate interaction in an area that's not dominated by the sofa.

Place a coffee table or an oversized ottoman in front of the couch. You may find that your previous coffee table isn't big enough to match your new couch well. Determine whether you want to buy a larger replacement in a new style or simply position the old coffee table in another part of the room near your existing furniture.

Position your end tables in locations convenient for those sitting on the furniture. Once again, you may find that your existing tables are dwarfed by the new couch. Determine whether you can find a use for them or whether you want to replace them. Placing them nearer your existing pieces is an option where they won't seem small in comparison.
