Reupholstering a Chair With an Attached Cushion

If the fabric on a kitchen or dining room chair wears out, it might be cheaper to reupholster the chair -- put new fabric on it -- than to buy a new set of chairs. These chair cushions usually aren't removable unless you unscrew the seat from the chair. However, once you disassemble your chair you can easily attach whatever fabric you want. Reupholster chairs to give your kitchen and dining room an entire new look. You probably want to reupholster the whole set of chairs at once so you'll continue to have a matching set.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair upside down. Unscrew the seat from the rest of the chair.

    • 2

Place the fabric you're using to upholster the chair on a flat surface such as a floor or table. Put the seat face down on the fabric.

    • 3

Fold the fabric over the cushion to see how much fabric you need. Unfold the fabric and cut out the amount of fabric you need.

    • 4

Check that the seat is centered on the fabric you just cut out. Fold the fabric over the cushion. Staple the fabric to one side of the cushion with a staple gun, stapling every inch. Stop stapling about 4 inches from each corner.

    • 5

Flip the seat over. Pull the fabric towards the opposite edge of the seat from the one you're working with and smooth it over so there are no wrinkles. Turn the seat back over and staple the fabric to the far edge of the seat. Repeat this step for all four edges.

    • 6

Trim any excess fabric that's hanging off the seat before putting the seat on the chair and screwing it back in.
