Upholstered Deck Vs. Euro Slats

The deck of a chair is the back-most portion of the seat. This area is designed to add extra strength and support to the chair and typically contains the strongest wood. In modern furniture design, there are two trending kinds of chairs -- traditional upholstered chairs that cover the deck with padding and fabric for added comfort, and Euro slat chairs, which use flexible cuts of wood for strength and comfort.
  1. Upholstered Deck

    • Upholstered decks are built from strong, inflexible wood framing, usually featuring 2-by-4 pieces of hardwood such as maple. Springs are then woven around the frame to allow some give to the seat. Upholstery foam padding is then glued onto the wood frame for comfort, and fabric is tightly stapled to the frame to hide the springs and foam.

    Euro Slats

    • Euro slat furniture uses a standard furniture framing with the typical box and leg design. The difference lies in the support and give mechanisms. Flexible slats of wood are placed into miter joints and held in place by the pressure of the frame. A chair pillow or cushion is then placed over the slats for added comfort or to complement a home’s decor, but the deck doesn't actually require any upholstery for comfort.

    Upholstery Advantages

    • Upholstered decks allow more freedom for selecting fabric that matches your personal decor. Additionally, upholstery chair frames are sturdier and more likely to outlast abuse from children and guests. Finally, most upholstered furniture has a much longer life and can be reupholstered numerous times before its time runs out.

    Euro Slat Advantages

    • Euro slats add a modern touch to a home’s decor. For homes with allergy sufferers, they're ideal because they don't require padding or fabric which can harbor dust and other allergens. The slats offer a firm sitting surface ideal for anyone with back or spine problems. Finally, Euro slat furniture can be used indoors or outdoors.
