How to Replace the Cushion on a La-Z-Boy Recliner

La-Z-Boy is the signature name of one of the best-known reclining chair manufacturers, La-Z-Boy Incorporated. A La-Z-Boy recliner has a pedestal leg support that extends from the chair base when the back is tilted rearward. The pedestal retracts when the chair back is returned to its upright position. If you and your family relish sitting in your La-Z-Boy recliner, it's likely that your chair's seat cushion is worn or even damaged. You can replace the cushion of your La-Z-Boy recliner with a few tools and basic do-it-yourself ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back from your La-Z-Boy recliner. Tilt the recliner forward until the front ends of the arms contact the floor.

    • 2

Find the two locking handles on either side of the recliner’s back. The handles are located within the slot between the back and the sides.

    • 3

Raise each handle one at a time using the tip of a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 4

Return the recliner to its upright position. Lift the back up and off.

    • 5

Lift the skirting at the bottom rear of the recliner. The skirting secures on either side with hook-and-loop strips.

    • 6

Tilt the recliner forward and let it rest on its arms as outlined in Step 1.

    • 7

Locate the two pins on either side of the cushion framework. The pins are flat on the top; they secure a steel brace to the cushion frame. A retaining screw holds each pin in place.

    • 8

Remove the retaining screws from the pins using the flat-head screwdriver. Turn the screws counterclockwise to remove them.

    • 9

Remove the pins by pulling them straight out from the cushion frame and brace using combination pliers. This releases the front of the cushion from the recliner.

    • 10

Raise the released front of the cushion up and locate the screws that secure the back of the seat to the arms. The screws are on both sides and are conspicuous with the cushion raised.

    • 11

Remove the screws from the cushion frame using the screwdriver.

    • 12

Remove the cushion from the recliner by lifting it up.

    • 13

Install the replacement recliner cushion and secure the back frame screws using the screwdriver. Tighten the screws clockwise.

    • 14

      Lower the cushion into position.

    • 15

Line up the steel braces with the pinholes and install the pins. Press the pins inward with the flat-head screwdriver until the retaining screw holes are aligned with the holes in the frame.

    • 16

Install the retaining screws through the flat end of the pins. Tighten them clockwise with the screwdriver.

    • 17

Return the recliner to its upright position.

    • 18

Align the side brackets of the recliner back with the locking handles. Lower it slowly until you hear a distinctive clicking sound, indicating the back is locked into place.
