How to Make a Mudroom Bench With Bins

Having your family and friends take their shoes off before entering your home protects your carpet from wear and tear, and prevents slips caused by water tracked in on shoes, among other things. Adding a bench to your mudroom, meanwhile, gives you, your family and your guests a place to sit to put shoes back on when leaving. Instead of spending a lot of money to purchase a store-bought bench, create your own. Then, place canvas bins under the bench to provide a place to store things such as mittens, hats and scarves.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four pieces of 16-by-16-by-1-inch wood pieces using a circular saw to create the sidepieces and dividers. Cut two pieces of 46-by-16-by-1-inch wood pieces for the top and the bottom of the bench. Cut one piece of 46-by-16-by-3/4-inch plywood for the bench’s back.

    • 2

Create a rectangle out of two of the sidepieces and the top and bottom piece. Rest all four pieces on their 1-inch sides. Put the cut end of the sidepieces against the long side of the top and bottom pieces. Apply wood glue where the pieces meet. Hammer 2-inch nails through the top and bottom pieces into the cut edges of the sidepieces. Place one nail every 4 inches.

    • 3

Slide the two divider pieces between the top and bottom pieces. Space them 14 inches in from either sidepiece to create three equal compartments. Secure the dividers in place by hammering nails through the top and bottom pieces into the ends of the dividers, spacing the nails every 4 inches down the length of the dividers.

    • 4

Place the plywood piece against the back of the bench. Since the construction is symmetrical, the back can be either side. Choose the side that looks the best constructed. Hammer a finishing nail through the plywood into the sidepieces, top, bottom and dividers ends. Space the nails every 6 inches.

Paint or stain the constructed bench the color you desire. Let the paint or stain dry overnight.

    • 6

Insert one 13-by-13-by-10-inch canvas bin into each of the three compartments on the bench.
