DIY Chair Weaving Using the Herringbone Method

Chair weaving is common for chairs with natural or cloth tape seats. This style of chair seat has been in use for hundreds of years because it's easy to replace a worn or rotting seat at any time. Often you can find chairs with woven seats at flea markets. Don't be put off by a worn-out seat; if the chair is in good condition you can easily add a new seat and have a like-new chair. Look for chairs with rails on all four sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any tape and tacks from the chair. Tack the end of the cloth tape to the inside of the left side rail. Upholstery cloth tape is a durable, strong ribbon-like strip that's usually 1/8 inch thick and 1 inch wide. Thinner tapes are also available. Pull the tape to the back of the chair. Bring the tape up over the back rail so it's alongside the left rear leg.

    • 2

Stretch the tape to the front rail alongside the left front leg. Go over the front rail, under the chair seat and up over the back rail touching the side of the first cloth tape. Continue across the chair to the right side. Tack off the end to the inside of the right side rail. These are your warp tapes.

    • 3

Tack off a new section of cloth tape to the back inside rail. Bring the tape to the left, up and over the left side rail in front of the left leg. Weave the tape under the first two rows, over the next two rows, under and over until you reach the right side.

    • 4

Bring the tape over the right side rail to the underside of the chair. Your underside wrap tapes will be at an angle from front to rear. This is normal. Weave a simple over and under pattern to reach the left side of the chair.

    • 5

Cut 1-inch foam to the shape of your chair seat. Make the the foam 1 inch smaller on each side so it'll be hidden inside the chair weaving. Insert the foam between the top and bottom layers of tapes.

    • 6

Weave the second row of tape on the top of the chair seat. Start by going over one tape, then under two. Continue over two and under two until you reach the right side rail. Go over the side rail to the underside. Since you began your first underside row by weaving the tape over, then under, start your second row by weaving under, then over, so it'll be the opposite of the first row.

Weave the third row of tape on the top of the chair seat. Start by going over two tapes, then under two. Continue over two and under two until you reach the right side rail. If you look at your seat pattern you'll see that your herringbone pattern is offsetting to the right.

Weave your underside. Start your fourth row under one and over two. Start your fifth row back at the beginning of the pattern, under two and over two. Repeat this pattern until you reach the front rail. Tack off the tape to the front inside chair rail.
