How to Convert a Club Chair to a Glider

Club chairs are often comfortable and relaxing. Many people use club-sized chairs for reading or long-term lounging. You can add to the flexibility of this style of chair by mounting a glider to its underside. The glider will allow you to slide the chair forward and back in a rocking motion and some glider bases also allow you to pivot or turn the chair on the base. Installing the base should take only a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the club chair upside down and remove the cambric fabric. Use pliers to pull out the staples or tacks. Measure the underside frame of the chair from front to back. Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch-by-3 1/2-inch board to this size.

    • 2

Install the two boards from the back to the front spaced apart from the center of the chair using the specifications of your particular glider base manufacturer. Screw the boards securely to the chair frame using wood screws and a screwdriver. Typically the boards are 4 3/4 to 5 inches apart.

Place the glider base on the floor. Position the chair on the base approximately centered. Move the chair back and forward on the base until it sits correctly. By leaving the legs on the chair you can measure from each leg to the floor for the natural stance of the chair. All of the legs should be the same distance from the floor. Mark the location of the glider on the boards.

Turn the chair upside down and mount the glider assembly to the mounting boards using the fasteners and installation instructions provided by the manufacturer. Use your guide marks for the correct location. Unscrew the chair legs.

Fit the cambric to the underside of the chair cutting around the glider assembly. Staple or tack the fabric back into place to prevent animals from crawling up inside the furniture.
