Reupholstering a Padded Removable Seat

One of the fastest, easiest and cheapest ways to change the look of a padded chair seat is to change the fabric. Old-fashioned or worn material on your chairs will ruin the look of an otherwise attractive room. An outdated dining room set benefits greatly from new upholstery on chairs, and removable seats makes changing the fabric a simple task.

  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair to expose the bottom of the seat. Locate the screws holding the seat to the frame and use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws. Put the screws in a bag for safekeeping.

    • 2

Remove the staples attaching the fabric to the seat. Pry the staples loose using a screwdriver. Pull broken staples out with pliers.

    • 3

Iron the old fabric to remove creases and use it as a pattern for cutting the new upholstery fabric.

    • 4

Replace old padding, if necessary, with the same thickness as the original padding. Glue the padding with craft glue to hold into place.

    • 5

Spread the new upholstery fabric on a flat surface with the right side of the material facing up. Align the old fabric on top of the new fabric to get the best look for any designs. Pin the old fabric to the new and cut the fabric with scissors.

    • 6

Flip the material so the wrong side is facing up and place the seat on the fabric with the bottom of the seat facing up. Staple the corners to the back of the seat by taking each corner and pulling it diagonally and stapling it to the seat. Put the staples 1 inch from the edge of the seat.

    • 7

Fold the bottom edge of the fabric to the wrong side of the chair seat. Put staples 2 inches apart to hold the fabric to the chair seat.

    • 8

Gently pull the top edge of the fabric over to the back of the seat. Keep the tension consistent to create a smooth finished look. Staple the cloth to the seat.

    • 9

Continue to fold and staple the left and right sides of the fabric to the seat. Make adjustments as needed at the corners for a neat, finished look.

    • 10

Replace the seat to the chair using the original screws.
