How to Fix a Broken Spring in a Parson's Chair

A Parson’s chair owes its history to the Parson’s School of Design, which created the original design. The chairs feature an armless design with a long back and four legs. The curved design of the chair has an elegant and timeless look. Each chair has a padded seat with foam or fabric padding attached to springs. The springs offer support and make the chair feel more comfortable. When the chair loses some of its comfort or you notice springs poking through the fabric cover, you must remove the cover and gain access to the springs.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair over so that it lays flat with the back touching the ground. Look at the bottom of the seat and find the metal staples holding the fabric to the chair frame. Remove each staple with a staple remover and discard them.

    • 2

Grasp the fabric on the bottom of the chair and start peeling it off the frame. Simply peel the fabric off the frame, using a light hand as to not tear or damage the fabric. Remove enough fabric that you can access the bottom of the chair.

    • 3

Find the broken spring on the chair. Look for the zigzap clip, which resembles a curved metal piece attached to the chair. The spring slips inside the clip. Remove the screws from the clip with a screwdriver and pull the clip off the chair. Remove the clip on the other end of the broken spring.

    • 4

Slip the new spring into a new zigzag clip. Place the clip flat against the chair frame. Slide a 1-inch wood screw through one of the screw holes in the clip. Tighten the screw with your screwdriver. Set a second screw against the other hole in the hinge and tighten.

    • 5

Pull the spring across the chair frame. Mark where the spring touches the opposite side of the frame and cut the spring with wire cutters. Slide a second zigzag clip over the end of the spring. Secure the clip to the frame with 1-inch wood screws, just as you did in the last step.

    • 6

Wrap a piece of twine around the side of the chair frame and weave the twine through the spring. Wrap the twine or string around the opposite side of the chair. Tie a knot in the string and trim off the excess.

    • 7

Fold the fabric back over the springs and padding. Attach the fabric to the chair with a staple gun and staples. Hold the staple gun flat against the fabric and push down. The staples should sit flush with the chair and secure the fabric to the frame.
