How to Wrap the Corner of a Chair With Fabric

Whether you are upholstering an entire chair or just repairing damage to the corners, wrapping the fabric properly around the chair creates a smooth, professional-looking edge that doesn't detract from the chair's appearance. Select upholstery-weight fabrics, even if you are only redoing the corners. These fabrics can withstand wear and tear better since they are more durable than lighter-weight fabrics. Wrapping the fabric properly may vary, depending on the chair style and how you are covering the rest of the chair, so use pins to hold the fabric in place. You can then make any adjustments before you stitch it on.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the upholstery fabric over the chair. The placement of the fabric depends on whether you are upholstering the seat corners, the back or the arms, but the fabric should be at least 3 inches longer than needed regardless of the area.

    • 2

Tuck the fabric in along the vertical edge of the corner, similar to wrapping a gift. Pin the fold in place using upholstery pins.

    • 3

Repeat the tuck on the vertical edge of the opposite corner, pinning this fold in place. Smooth out the fabric inside the tuck so it lies flat between the two corners and doesn't create a lump.

    • 4

Thread a curved upholstery needle with heavy-duty upholstery thread in a color that matches the fabric. Knot the end of the thread securely.

    • 5

Sew the fold together using small, even stitches. Camouflage the stitching by placing it where the two folds meet from the tucked fabric down the vertical edge of the corner.
