How to Pack a Chair

When you pack a chair, take care to protect all the surfaces that could be damaged. Exposed wood and delicate fabrics can be dented or soiled whether the chair is being moved across town or simply going into storage. Items fall and shift unexpectedly in a moving truck. Dust accumulates in storage and can be hard to get out of some fabrics. A few simple supplies and a little time spent packing properly can keep your chair looking great.

Wrap bubble wrap or packing paper around wood arms, legs, spindles and any other exposed wood. As you wrap, tape the protective material in place with packing tape. When the chair has removable cushions and you're transporting it, go ahead and leave the cushions on as long as they're secure. If not, pack the cushions separately. Be careful where you apply the packing tape. It can leave a sticky residue. In the case of fabric, you run the risk of pulling up small amounts of fabric when removing the tape.

Plan how you'll pack the truck, van or storage unit where you'll be placing the chairs. Keep in mind that lighter chairs can go on heavier objects, if necessary.

    • 3

Start by standing a chair on its feet in the truck or storage unit. Stack a matching chair face down on top of it. The tops of the seats will be pressing against each other. This method saves space and works well for kitchen and dining room chairs.

Secure the chairs with rope if it appears they might shift during transport. If the chairs are wedged in between other items with little chance of moving, this probably isn't necessary. However, if the chairs are among the last things packed or are sitting on top of other items, you'll want to tie them down. The sides of most moving trucks have anchors on their inside walls that you can tie a rope to. Use a utility knife to cut the rope.

Cover the chairs with moving pads or blankets. This is especially important for padded chairs covered in fabric or if you set lighter items on top of heavier chairs. If you're transporting the chairs, this will protect them from damage. If you're storing them, protects them from dust.
