Ideas for Reupholstering a Chair

Upholstery can change the look and feel of a chair, transforming it into a stylish piece of furniture. For old chairs, new upholstery can extend the chair's life and update it to complement your decor and home design. As you plan an upholstery project, buy swatches of material to allow you to gauge how it will affect the atmosphere and feel of the room.
  1. Half and Half

    • For an unexpected upholstery, choose two pieces of fabric and use one on each half of the chair. For a subtle effect, look for fabric in similar patterns and different colors, or choose two shades of the same color. If you want to create a more dramatic look, find fabric with a bold contrast of color and pattern, or choose two solid colors from opposite sides of the color spectrum. On chairs with a formal or traditional style, this method can add a pleasing, modern touch.

    Dining Chairs

    • If you want to add a touch of softness to a standard wooden dining room chair, add an upholstered section to the seat. Because the seats of chairs are not immediately visible in the dining room, you can use bold patterns and colors that will be a surprise when a guest pulls out her chair. If you want more visible color, add a panel to the back of the chair. For this method, use more than one fabric for an eclectic look, or use solid-color fabrics for a jewel box effect.

    Bold Patterns

    • For smaller armchairs, add a dramatic touch to a room by using a bold pattern upholstery fabric. In homes with a modern decor scheme, look for a pattern that contrasts with the room but uses colors that appear in tiny elements. If your home has a largely traditional design, bold upholstery can give it a contemporary feeling without sacrificing the overall style concept. Look for fabric that has similar colors and a sense of drama without being overwhelming. A black-and-white stripe upholstery, for example, can make a statement without making a room feel unbalanced.

    Textured Fabric

    • A lush, textured upholstery fabric can make a chair look and feel expensive without the high cost of a new chair. Choose soft suede fabric or a wide-wale corduroy. For a touch of old-world elegance, look for a thick upholstery-grade velvet for a chair that will be soft and comfortable. If you have children, choose a fabric that will not stain easily and that can be cleaned quickly in case of spills.
