How to Replace a Cane Bottom in a Chair With Holes Drilled in the Frame

Cane-bottom chairs have holes drilled into the frame along the seat of the chair. Most cane chairs are woven or braided by hand, with wicker cane. The wicker cane is weaved through the holes in the seat several times in crisscrossing patterns, which allows the cane fibers to bind together and make a strong seat. Wicker cane comes in rolls and can be purchased from a wicker supplier.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the cane before you begin to weave the chair. Cane will be brittle and can easily break if not properly soaked first to make it pliable. Soak the cane in warm water for 15 minutes. Prepare your workspace while the cane is soaking.

    • 2

Spread old newspaper or a tarp on a flat surface. Place the chair on top of the newspaper or tarp, and place the golf tees in a small bowl on the side. Fill a spray bottle with warm water. The cane will have to be sprayed with warm water to keep it pliable and to make the cane fiber bond.

    • 3

Check the cane strands after soaking to see whether they bend without breaking. Make sure the barbs in the cane face opposite you when weaving or else you will wind up with cut fingers and the cane could rip as you weave.

    • 4

Weave the cane by pulling tight. Keep the cane strand straight as you weave. Wrap the cane around the edge of the furniture in the hole, twice. Place a golf tee in the hole to secure in place.

    • 5

Continue weaving by bringing the cane through the second hole and straight across as well. Make sure the pull is tight but don't break the cane, and secure in place with a second golf tee. Repeat by weaving in either direction, until the first layer of cane covers the entire seat surface.

    • 6

Bring the second layer of cane over the first in a parallel direction, so that the cane fibers criss-cross the first layer. Pull the cane tightly as you weave. Continue to secure cane in place with golf tees, and wrap the cane around edges as you weave. The cane should look like little squares across the surface by the time the second layer is complete.

    • 7

Repeat until there is a thick amount of cane strong enough to be used as a seat. Weave under the first strand or layer, and up over the second to form even smaller squares when weaving the third layer. Make sure the third layer is parallel too. Keep spraying the cane as you go to moisten and bond the cane fiber. Once dry, the fibers will harden and make the chair seat even stronger.
