How to Build a Computer Chair

So you set up your desk and your computer on top of it. As soon as you try to use it, though, you may notice the screen is never quite at eye level. The best thing for that, you'll find, is a chair. You can use a stool, an exercise ball or even a couch, but the most popular choice for comfort and maneuverability is a swivel chair. Once you've removed it from its box, however, you'll still need to build it.

Remove the pieces carefully from the box and lay them all out on a table (or another flat surface). Identify the different pieces. Most swivel chairs will have a seat pad and a back (either together or separate), a right and left arm, a five-sided base, five casters (wheels of the chair), and a cylinder or a gas lift. There should also be a pack of the screws and other fasteners needed, often with an included tool.

    • 2

Place the five casters in the holes on the underside of the base and apply your body weight to each one to secure them.

    • 3

Fit the cylinder into the hole on the top of the base.

    • 4

Turn the seat pad on its side and line up the hole or holes in the bottom of the left arm with the hole or holes in the bottom of the seat pad. Use the corresponding connection hardware (screws, bolts or washers) to secure the arm to the seat pad with a screwdriver. Repeat the process with the right arm.

    • 5

Turn the seat pad upside down with its back off the edge of a table and connect the bottom of the back to the back of the seat pad. Use the screws, bolts or washers to secure them.

Keeping the seat pad and the attached back and arms upside down, turn the base with the attached cylinder and casters upside down as well and connect the end of the cylinder to the hole in the bottom of the seat pad. Holding both the base and the seating pad, turn the chair upright.
