Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the seat and back of the chair to be upholstered. Add to these measurements the height of the cushioning you will be using. Bring the measurements with you when purchasing fabric for the chair.

    • 2

Remove any fabric, springs or stuffing presently in the chair if you are reupholstering.

    • 3

Place the chair upside down. Remove all tacks and staples used to secure the fabric.

    • 4

Measure the length and width of the frames for the seat. Measure the back for the webbing.

    • 5

Cut each strip of webbing 6-inches longer than the measured lengths.

    • 6

Fasten the webbing strips, beginning with those running from the back to the front of the seat. Fold each strip 1 1/2-inches from one end, and then staple the fold to the frame. Pull the webbing taught by using a stretcher, and then staple the webbing to the opposite side of the frame. Fold the webbing 1 1/2-inches on that side as well, and then stable the fold securely to the frame. Cut any excess material from the strip. The space between strips of webbing should be at least the same as their width.

    • 7

Fasten the webbing that runs side-to-side following the previously completed procedure, but weave the strips above and below the first set.

    • 8

Turn the chair over. Fasten webbing to the back of the chair following the previously described methods.

    • 9

Secure the springs to the seat webbing with a needle and string. Tie the bottom coil of each spring to the webbing, centered where the webbing crosses. Springs should be arranged evenly, less than 4-inches apart. Tie the springs together with string at the top coils.

    • 10

Cut a piece of burlap a few inches wider and longer than the seat; place it on the springs. Staple the burlap to the seat frame, pulling it taught as you staple. Use a needle and string to sew the burlap to the springs.

    • 11

Cut the foam and batting to fit the seat, and then place it on the burlap.

    • 12

Cut the fabric 6-inches larger than the seat frame's length and width. Place it on the foam, and then staple it to the frame; pull it taught as you staple. Cut a "V" in corners of the fabric to make a clean fold. Cut off any excess fabric.

    • 13

Upholster the back of the chair using the previously described methods.
