How to Dismantle a Wing Chair

Dismantling a wing-back chair is a simple process, but it is very time-consuming. There are few reasons why you would need to take a wing chair completely apart, but you may have to take the chair apart to replace a faulty piece of wood or damaged spring. Take your time when taking apart the chair to prevent the damage to the chair pieces that you wish to reuse. If you do not want to reuse any part of the chair, then you can dismantle the chair however you like.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair onto its side. Put on the work gloves. Remove the staples from the bottom of the chair. Pull off the mesh or cloth cover on the bottom of the chair exposing the springs.

    • 2

Use the pliers and the awl to carefully pull up all staples and other pieces holding the upholstery pieces in place. This is a delicate process that will take some time to avoid injuries. Use the awl to pull apart sewn seams. If you don't care about saving the fabric, you can rip through it for easier removal.

    • 3

Pull off all of the foam on the chair back, bottom and arms.

    • 4

Inspect the joints between the wood pieces of the chair. They may be held in place with screws or nails. If the chair is held together with nails, cover the sides of the chair with an old towel. Hold one side of the chair and hit the other side with the mallet to loosen the nails. This works best if you start with the arm and back pieces.

    • 5

Pull out the nails once they are loose or unscrew the screws holding the pieces together. Unscrew the chair legs from the bottom of the chair seat.

    • 6

Pull the pieces apart by hand. This may take some effort if the pieces are glued or if they are held together by varnish or paint.

    • 7

Continue to break apart the pieces in this manner until all of the pieces are dissembled. If you want to remove the springs from the chair seat, cut the strings holding the springs in place with scissors and work the springs out from the bottom of the chair.
