How to Paint on a Plastic Chair

Don't throw out or get rid of a plastic chair that doesn't match your decor or is scuffed-up and dirty-looking just yet. A new coat of paint can freshen and liven up your chair to like-new condition. Since some paints are specially designed for plastic, the new finish will bond well to the plastic. Always paint outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, and don't forget to lay newspaper or a drop cloth under your chair. If you paint outdoors, choose a day when the winds are calm and the air is dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean a plastic chair with an all-purpose cleaner or ammonia. Use a sponge or rag, and get into all the nooks and crannies. Rinse the chair well with water. Let it air-dry, or wipe down the surface with a clean rag. Primer or any other prep work is not required for plastic.

    • 2

Shake a can of spray paint specially designed for plastic to mix the paint. Every minute or so, shake the can again to keep the paint well-mixed during the painting process.

    • 3

Hold the can 10 to 12 inches away from the chair and apply a thin coat of paint in horizontal, sweeping motions. Apply a second coat after the first coat dries to the touch, usually in about 15 minutes.
