Instructions to Make a Hammock Chair

Hammock chairs are a slight variation on the standard hammock and require a little more thought in construction than a length of sturdy material strung between two posts, like your basic hammock. While hammock chairs come in many variations, the basic structure consists of a strong beam about a yard long, off of which the hammock chair is suspended at each end. The central beam is then attached to a single anchor, be that a strong tree branch or overhead beam on a porch or even indoors. Hanging chairs can be made at home relatively simply and generally at a lower cost than store-bought varieties.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fabric in half, so that you have two square pieces, 36- by 36-inch. Sew the two pieces together on the sewing machine, using a double stitch all the way along one seam. Fold the seam over on itself and sew another double seam to ensure the strength of the joint. This is the chair back and seat.

    • 2

Position six eyelets evenly spaced along both of the long sides of the chair, the first and last eyelets being in the four corners. Press the eyelets together so that they are attached to the fabric, then cut out the fabric from the inside of the eyelet, so that a strong hole is created through which you can thread the rope of the hammock chair.

    • 3

Measure 2 inches in from the end of the dowel piece and drill a hole right through the diameter. Insert two eyebolts and attach them firmly with their corresponding nuts. Ensure that the dowel or beam you choose has a working weight capacity higher than that of the heaviest person you anticipate will be using the chair.

    • 4

Cut 12 lengths of rope that are the height you want your chair to hang, plus 3 yards. For example, if your hammock chair will be hanging 2 yards from a beam, cut 12 lengths of 5-yard rope. Choose rope that has a working weight capacity higher than the weight of the heaviest person who will use the hammock chair.

    • 5

Tie a very secure knot in the end of each rope, then thread each rope through an eyelet on the chair. Measure 1 yard up on the six ropes that are coming from the chair seat and tie them securely at this point to each side of the dowel rod, through the eyebolts, three on each side.

    • 6

Measure 30 inches along the first two ropes coming from the chair back, and tie them onto the eyebolt. Measure 24 inches up the next two ropes and tie them. Then measure 18 inches up the last two ropes and tie them off as well. This gives an easy recline to your seat back, while keeping it somewhat upright; you can adjust the recline to suit your taste. Braid the loose ends of rope on each side of the dowel.

Drill a hole for the swivel eyebolt in the beam or tree branch where you want to hang the hammock chair. Attach the eyebolt with its accompanying nuts. Tie the two ends of the braided rope securely onto the swivel eyebolt to suspend your hammock chair in position. Ensure that you have an even length of braided rope on each side so that the chair hangs level.
