How to Stop a Chair From Sliding on a Carpet

Chairs that slide on carpet when you go to sit or stand up can be more than just a bothersome nuisance. A sliding chair can damage the carpet beneath it and can even lead to injury, especially with the elderly. Getting chairs to stop sliding on carpets is by no means a difficult task, requiring little more than a few inexpensive gripping pads or even a towel. In just a matter of minutes, you'll be able to stop your chairs from sliding on the carpet, making the furniture both safer and more comfortable.

Soapy rag
Dry rag
Rug grip pads
Scissors or carpet knife

Instructions

  Rest the chair on its side so that you have clear and easy access to the base.

  Wipe down the base of the chair with a soapy rag. This is to remove any dust, dirt or oil that could weaken the adhesive on the rug grip pads. Once wiped down, wipe again with a dry rag and allow to sit and dry for 10 to 20 minutes.

  Place the adhesive side of the rug grip pads on the base of the chair. Use a knife or a pair of scissors to cut away any remaining bits of pad that stick out from under the chair. If your chair does not have a proper base but only four legs, refer to the Tips section of this article.

  Stand the chair upright in its previous location and allow 10 to 15 minutes for the adhesive to set. Once it has set, you can sit down and use the chair as normal.
