How to Make Chair Legs Slide on Carpet

It can be difficult to slide a chair across a carpeted floor surface. The wood or metal leg can catch on the carpet fibers. This can result in tearing or snagging the carpeting, or even the chair being knocked over. It is not difficult to add sliders to the chair legs, so the chair can glide across the floor smoothly, without damaging the floor. The chair sliders are inexpensive and can last for many years.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the width of the bottom of the chair legs. This helps determine what type of chair sliders to purchase.

    • 2

Purchase the correct size of furniture slider for your chair. You can find many different sizes and types at hardware, home supply and discount stores.

    • 3

Peel off the adhesive backing if you purchase the peel-and-stick variety of sliders. Stick them on the bottom of each chair leg.

    • 4

Slip the slider onto each chair leg if you purchase the kind that slip over the furniture leg and extend along the leg about 1 or 2 inches. This type of slider is often seen on chairs with round metal legs.

    • 5

Use a hammer to nail the slider onto the bottom section of each chair leg. This takes a bit more effort, but they are more permanent than the type with adhesive backing that may loosen over time.
