How to Move a Reclining Chair Upstairs

Moving any piece of furniture up stairs can be difficult if you do not prepare. Making sure the staircase is wide enough to accommodate your reclining chair and taking steps to protect the chair will make the process much simpler. Enlist the help of a buddy to steady the recliner as you move it and to help you bear the weight of the chair on the staircase.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the staircase and the width of the recliner to make sure the recliner will fit up the stairs.

    • 2

Wrap the bottom of the reclining chair where the foot rest pops up with plastic bubble wrap. Wrap the bubble wrap all the way around the chair, then tape it down with packing tape. This will prevent the foot rest from extending while you are moving.

    • 3

Drape a moving cart or dolly with blankets to prevent damage to the recliner. Insert the bottom edge of the dolly under the back of the recliner. Pull back on the handle of the dolly while a helper steadies the recliner as you tilt it backwards.

    • 4

Walk backwards up the stairs as you hold on to the handles of the dolly. Pull the dolly up the stairs one stair at a time while your helper pushes and steadies the recliner. Coordinate your efforts so that you pull as the helper pushes, then stop and rest at each step.

    • 5

Tilt the recliner forward once you are upstairs and pull the dolly from underneath the back of the chair. Remove the plastic wrap.
