# How to Find the Radius of a Chair Surface
Basic geometry formulas are helpful tools for do-it-yourself wood-working projects around the house. The radius is a measurement of a circle that is equal to half its diameter. The diameter is found by measuring the distance from a point on the circle to its counterpoint on the opposite side. To find the radius of a chair surface, the seat of the chair must have a circular shape, similar to that of a stool.

Measure the diameter of the chair surface. Stretch the measuring tape across the surface of the chair so that it is split in two equal halves.

Record the distance from the outermost opposite edges of the chair surface. This value, written as D, is the diameter. For example, D = 16 inches.

Divide the diameter in half using your calculator to find the radius, or r, of the chair surface. For example, if r = D/2, then inserting the known diameter from Step 2 yields r = 16/2. Solve for r to obtain 8 inches.
