Measure the space in which you will place the chairs. While measuring, consider the room's shape and other aspects, such as its tables and other kinds of furniture.
Allow 4 to 5 feet between the wall, or walls, and the table or desk with which you will use the chairs. Take special account of how deep a chair seat should be in order for you to have enough room. Allow walking room behind each chair and room for you to pull a chair away from the table or desk, sit down and scoot the chair back to the table or desk.
Measure from the underside of the desk or table to the floor to determine how much clearance is available. This will give you a height to go by when measuring the height of a chair's seat and, if applicable, arms. The average table has about 25 inches of clearance.
