Do-it-Yourself Installation of Caster Wheels on Dining Chairs

Caster wheels are wheels that swivel to allow you to push a chair or other type of furniture easily on a floor surface. The caster selected should match the capacity of the furniture. For most dining chairs, the capacity is determined by the amount of weight the chair is designed to support. It is also important to choose the caster designed for the flooring surface in the dining room. Adding a caster to a non-caster chair is easy using the plate-mounting style of caster.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the dining room chair upside down so that the bottoms of the legs are within easy reach. Measure the dimensions of the chair bottom with a tape measure. If there is an existing pad or bumper on the chair leg, remove it.

    • 2

Select a plate-mounting type of caster wheel. The caster should be designed to carry one-quarter the maximum weight that the chair is rated for. The caster wheel should be matched to the type of flooring surface where the chair will be used. The mounting plate needs to be smaller in size than the bottom of the chair leg.

Position the mounting plate centered on the bottom of the chair leg. Mark the mounting holes with a pencil. Drill pilot holes at each mark that are one size smaller than the screws that are included with the casters, or those that you will use to install the casters.

Screw the mounting plate to the bottom of the chair leg with a screwdriver. Repeat for each leg.
