DIY Window Seat Cushion

A window seat is not complete without a comfy box pillow on top. Rather than forking out your hard-earned cash on a store-bought cushion, one that may not even fit the window seat right, make your own custom cushion. Making a cushion for your window seat is surprisingly easy and much cheaper than buying one. You can add piping to the cushion if you want, or side fringe, tassels or even buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top of the window seat to get the dimensions of the cushion. Use the electric knife to cut the foam to size.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric measuring the lengths and height of the cushion plus 1/2 inch all around for seams, using scissors. Cut two pieces of fabric to the width and height of the cushion plus 1/2 inch all around for seams.

    • 3

Pin the ends of the fabric strips together, alternating between the length pieces and the width pieces to form a rectangle, which will be the sides of the cushion. The wrong side of the fabric should be facing out. Sew the pinned ends together.

    • 4

Cut two lengths of the fabric for the top and bottom of the cushion, the size of the top of the foam, plus 1/2 inch all around for seams. Pin one piece of fabric to all the edges of the side rectangle, with the wrong side of the fabric up. Sew this piece to the edge strip.

    • 5

Pin the remaining piece of fabric around the other side of the edge strip, leaving one end and around 4 inches of the side unpinned. The wrong side of the fabric should be up. Sew all the pinned area together.

    • 6

Turn the cushion cover in the right way, then fit it over the foam, using the end left unstitched. Use the needle and thread to hand-stitch the open portion of the cushion cover over the foam to complete the window seat cushion.
