How to Make a Toadstool Chair

Create a wonderland in your back yard or enliven a child's bedroom with toadstools. These stools, meant to resemble mushrooms, are inspired by fairy tales such as the classic book and movie "Alice in Wonderland." Toadstools have one stump instead of four legs and are most often short in stature. With a tree stump and a list of tools from a local craft store, you can create a playful environment and a functional place to sit.

15-inch disc of thick plywood
13-inch disc of thick plywood

6-inch thick foam

Acrylic paint (gray and white)

Instructions

  Glue a piece of six-inch thick foam to a 15-inch circle of plywood. The foam should cover the entire piece of plywood. Use an electric knife to shape the foam into a dome.

  Cut batting into a circle that has a six-inch larger circumference than the plywood. With the dome facing downward, staple the batting to the underside of the plywood and wrap the battling up around the circumference of the plywood and staple in place.

  Place a large piece of red felt (approximately 30 inches) underneath the dome, with the dome still facing downward. Wrap the foam tightly around the dome and staple in place at the underside of the plywood. Cut off any extra fabric.

  Flip the dome seat right side up and paint large white dots on the red felt to resemble a mushroom. Let dry.

  Paint a 13-inch disc of plywood gray. Let dry.

  Drill a hole into the center of the 13-inch plywood disc and into the underside of the 15-inch plywood disc. Attach the two with screws.

  Drill more holes into the underside of the 13-inch disc and matching holes into the top of the tree stump and attach the dome seat to the tree stump.
