How to Cover a Chair Pad

Chair pads are detachable wood base cushions typically found on dining room chairs. One side of the wood base is cushioned and the wood base is screwed into the underside of the chair. This makes the chair pad easy to cover in a few minutes with basic tools. Because the pad is so easy to cover, you can consider using expensive upholstery fabric that will hold up well and look good.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair upside down and remove the cambric, the black porous cloth covering the underside. Unscrew the chair pad from the chair with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the tacks or staples on the bottom of the chair pad and those on the underside of the chair frame if the cambric was attached to the frame. Remove the fabric from the chair pad.

    • 3

Place upholstery fabric face down on the work table. Center the chair pad over any pattern or design on the fabric and align the pad so that any stripes are straight.

    • 4

Pull the top center of the fabric to the back underside and staple 2 inches from the edge. Pull the bottom center of the fabric to the back underside and stable 2 inches from the edge. Stretch the right side to the center and staple and then the left. Continue stapling and stretching away from the center moving from top, bottom, right and left. Staple every inch.

Make four small folds at each corner stapling them evenly. Trim off the excess fabric. Place the pad onto the chair and screw the pad to the frame. Fit new cambric to the bottom of the frame. Cut the cambric 1/2 inch larger on all sides and fold the fabric under and staple the cambric to the frame neatly.
