How to Stop Squeaking in a Gliding Chair

Gliding chairs, also known as gilding rockers or simply gliders, are chairs with a mechanical base that allows the user to move back and forth without moving the chair runners. The moving parts of the gliders, whether they are plastic, wood or metal, can begin to rub together and make squeaking noises when you move the chair. Lubricating the places where the moving parts meet will solve this problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Baby oil

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chair on its side so it rests on one of the arms. Dip a cotton swab in the baby oil.

    • 2

Grasp one of the runners and pull it so the moving parts of the chair base are fully extended. You could also have a helper do this while you lubricate the joints of the chair.

    • 3

Swab the areas where any moving parts meet with the baby oil. If the swab dries up, dip it in the oil again. Apply the baby oil liberally to any parts kept together with a nut and bolt.

    • 4

Push the runner of the chair back into place, then pull it forward again to work the baby oil into the joints of the chair base. Wipe off any excess oil that does not work its way into the joints. Turn the chair back upright.
