What Paints Adhere to Plastic Chairs?

When you have plastic chairs, especially ones that are used outdoors, they tend to get worn and you think about throwing them away and purchasing new ones. However, you can paint these chairs to give them a whole new life. Painting chairs is much less expensive. Regular spray paint will not work, though. You must purchase special paint that is made to adhere to the plastic.
  1. Enamel

    • An enamel paint will give you good results when painting your plastic chairs. This will give them a semi-shiny finish that makes the chairs look as if they are brand new. A few brands that offer paints that adhere well to plastic chairs are Valspar, Rust-Oleum and Krylon Fusion. Make sure to purchase the Fusion type of the Krylon, as the regular spray paint will not adhere to the plastic for any length of time. After just a few days, the paint will begin to chip and peel off.

    Latex

    • Latex paints will also work when repainting plastic chairs. For best results, use an outdoor latex paint after using a primer first. Latex paints will give your chairs that brand new look. It is also an easy paint to clean once it is completely cured. If the chairs get dirty, wipe them off with a soft rag and warm, soapy water.

    Primer

    • Before attempting to paint the plastic chairs, it is best to first coat them with a special primer paint. If you do not want to use a primer, you can always give the entire chair a good scrubbing with some sand paper to help rough up the surfaces of the chair. However, for best results, use a special plastic spray paint primer to give you a better surface to paint, and thus a better looking chair in the end.

    Adhesion Promoter

    • An adhesion promoter is similar to a primer, but mainly used on car bodies. Before painting your chairs, clean them well with a bleach solution, allow them to dry completely and then spray with the adhesion promoter. Allow that to dry and then use your chosen spray paint color. Always use a spray paint, as this will give you a smoother and much nicer looking finish. If you are having a hard time locating an adhesion promoter, look at your local auto parts store. One such product name is Bulldog.
