How to Set Up a Papasan Chair

A post-World War II import from the Philippines, the rattan papasan chair began to appear in furniture stores around the 1960s and appealed to the hip consumers of that era. Today the large, round chair makes for a comfortable reading nook or video game chair. Papasan chair owners may mistakenly believe that the base of the chair should have the larger side on the floor with the small part holding the seat. Although it makes sense from a stability standpoint, you must set the base up exactly the opposite way.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the base of the papasan chair with the large end facing up. This will provide a large area to hold the top of the chair.

    • 2

Set the frame of the papasan chair into the base. The frame's large, outer ring of rattan should sit against the outside ring of the base. When set correctly, the frame will support the user in an upright fashion.

    • 3

Put the papasan cushion into the frame. Adjust the cushion until it sets in the frame evenly on all sides.

    • 4

Pull the base away from other furniture or walls slightly because the frame can move if you sit in it roughly. When you sit down with the frame too close to other furniture or walls, you risk scratching the rattan.
