What Is an Armchair?

An armchair is a large chair with sides designed to rest your arms on. Typically armchairs are sold with matching ottomans, or as part of a living room suite with matching sofa and love seat. Armchairs are available in a range of styles, colors and materials to suit a variety decors.
  1. History

    • Armchairs were originally a sign of power and wealth. In most homes, occupants sat on stools or benches. The first armchairs were crafted using ivory, wood and precious metals. During the Renaissance, armchairs started to become available for people of more modest means.

    Materials

    • Armchairs are made of a variety of materials. Many modern designs are upholstered with durable materials such as cotton, leather and wool. Some styles are crafted with wood frames and fabric seat and backs. The feet of an armchair are often made of wood but modern styles also use wheels or metal feet.

    Function

    • Armchairs are designed to seat a single person comfortably -- many modern armchairs are as relaxing to sit in as a sofa or loveseat. Many dining room sets include at least one arm chair that sits at the head of the table, originally signifying the seat of the head of the family.

    Types

    • Armchairs are available in several styles. The most common styles include club chairs, wing back and recliners. Club chairs are little more than a leather armchair. They received their name because they were often found in gentlemen's clubs, originating from a style of straight back, buttoned armchair. This type of armchair is typically covered in leather, although modern styles mix fabric with leather, and are often sold with a matching ottoman. The armrests are high and the back is usually straight. Reclining armchairs are designed similar to a basic armchair, with a straight back and arms, but with a footrest that pops out as the chair reclines back. Sometimes referred to as a La-Z-Boy, the reclining armchair offers the function and comfort of a chair and a sofa in one. One of the oldest styles of armchairs, the wingback chair is still found in many homes. This type of arm chair is typically tall and narrow, with rounded arms and a high back. The back is rounded, with panels that resemble wings flanking each side. The wingback is available in a variety of styles from brightly colored '60s inspired chairs featuring metal or plastic, to classic Victorian-inspired designed using rich wood and upholstery.
