What Are Louis Ghost Chairs?

The Louis ghost chair was designed by Philippe Starck for the Italian manufacturer Kartell in 2002. It is formed from a polycarbonate that is poured into a single mold. The "ghost" quality comes from its transparency. Starck's Louis ghost chair is a modern stylization of the original baroque Louis XVI design and is available in lightly tinted colors as well as the original clear polycarbonate.
  1. Design

    • A Louis XVI chair was originally crafted of wood and used fabric for the back and seat. It is known for its simple elegance. The Starck ghost chair echoes the same style--the back is oval, the arms gently flair outward and down to reach the bottom of the seat and the legs are straight in the front and slightly flared in the rear.

    Manufacturing a Louis Ghost Chair

    • A polycarbonate is injected into a mold in the shape of a Louis XVI chair. There are no seams and no junctions; the form is one continuous shape. The original design had no color, hence the name "ghost chair." The Louis ghost chair is now manufactured in six transparent colors and two solids--black and white.

    Durability

    • The ghost chair's composition is of an extra-strong polycarbonate that makes it durable and scratch-resistant. There are no connecting points within the shape and there is no joinery, giving it strength. The chair withstands excess weight and can be stacked without the fear of surface damage. The Louis ghost chair is also weatherproof and can be used as outdoor furniture as well as in interior design.

    Maintenance

    • A Louis ghost chair can be cleaned using a damp cloth and slightly soapy water. While the polycarbonate withstands scratches, avoid abrasives and chemicals when cleaning. Wipe with a dry cloth to prevent water marks. The chair can be used outdoors but it should be cleaned if exposed to rain.

    Variations

    • The Lou Lou ghost chair is a smaller version of the Louis chair and is designed for children. Victoria ghost chairs are similar to the Louis style but without arms. These are excellent as dining side chairs and, when added to two Louis ghost chairs, make a complete dining chair set. The Charles "ghost" is a bar stool with a round seat but no back. All are made in the same manner as the Louis ghost chair and have the same qualities.
