How to Make a Wooden Beach Chair

Wooden beach chairs are used for lounging on the beach. They are foldable chairs that are lightweight and that can dig into the sand for stability. In order to be lightweight, a beach chair should be built using cedar. Cedar is lighter than pine and is just as strong. Not only does it have these qualities, but it it also has the natural ability to withstand constant exposure to moisture and sunlight without the application of wood stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 42-inch boards on edge, parallel, with their outside surfaces 19 inches apart. Set seven 19-inch boards perpendicularly on top of the boards so they're spaced 1/2 inch apart, with their ends flush with the sides of the boards and so one of the boards is flush with one pair of the 42-inch boards ends. Screw the boards in this position using four screws for each 19-inch board. This set of boards make up your backrest.

    • 2

Screw one more 19-inch board to the 42-inch boards so it is 20 inches away from the set that make up the backrest. Screw this board to the same edges of the 42-inch board so the ends of the board are flush with the sides of the 42-inch boards. Use four screws. This board will support your seat.

    • 3

Turn the 42-inch boards over so they're resting on the 19-inch boards. Screw the last 19-inch board to the 42-inch boards so it is parallel with the other 19-inch boards and 12 inches away from the pair of ends that has the seat support close to it. Make the ends flush with the sides of the 42-inch boards and use four screws.

    • 4

Lay the 34-inch boards on edge, parallel and with their outside surfaces 15 inches apart. Set five 15-inch boards perpendicularly on top of them so they're spaced 1/2 inch apart, so their ends are flush with the sides of the board and so one of the board's edges is flush with the ends of the 34-inch boards. Screw the boards in this position using four screws for each 15-inch board. This is the seat to your beach chair. You have 14 inches of clearance on the 34-inch boards. They will fit between the 42-inch boards and the two 19-inch seat support boards.

    • 5

Insert the 34-inch boards between the 42-inch and 19-inch seat support boards so 12 inches of the 34-inch boards are on the other side of the back rest. The 19-inch boards that make up the backrest should be facing the 15-inch boards and the 15-inch boards are facing upward. Drill a 1/8-inch hole through each 42-inch and 34-inch board that are against each other. Center the holes 1 3/4 inches away from each each edge of each board. Insert a 1/8-inch bolt through the holes and screw a wing nut on each bolt. Use your chair in this position when setting it up on the beach. The bolts allow the chair seat to fold toward the backrest for storage purposes.
