How to Cover a Papasan Chair

Papasan chairs are large round chairs that sit on adjustable rattan or bamboo frames. The chair typically has a round cushion although it is available in a few different shapes. Due to the difficulty in washing these large cushions, over time it will either need to be replaced or recovered to keep it looking new and fresh. To cover the cushion you can either buy manufactured covers or make your own. Making your own cover requires a sewing machine and new fabric to complete the project.

  • Old papasan chair cushion
  • Fabric ruler
  • Fabric
  • Iron
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the papasan pillow with a fabric ruler and add a few inches of length to each side and then double the measurements.

    • 2

Acquire enough fabric, preferably something durable and comfortable such as denim or cotton and polyester blends, to meet the amount of the measurements you have taken. It should equate to at least a couple of yards depending on the shape of the papasan chair.

    • 3

Wash and press the fabric with a hot iron to remove any folds if necessary.

    • 4

Fold the fabric in half and lay out the fabric on a flat, clean surface such as a freshly vacuumed floor.

    • 5

Set the papasan cushion on top of the fabric and cut around the cushion, leaving about two inches of extra length to account for the seam.

    • 6

Remove the cushion and inspect the edges of the two sides of fabric making sure that both pieces are evenly cut. Trim any areas that are not evenly cut.

    • 7

Lay the two pieces so the exterior sides of the fabric are facing each other, if they are not already, and pin them together with safety or sewing pins.

    • 8

Sew the two pieces together about one inch to 1.5 inches from the edge until half of the cover has been sewed. Any more than half could result in not being able to fit the cushion into the cover.

    • 9

Fit the half sewn cover around the cushion and hand stitch the remaining half of the cover while the cushion is inside of it until the cover is completely sealed and the old cushion is no longer visible.
