Fabric Needed to Re-Cover a Rocking Chair

Reupholstering your own furniture can save you tens to hundreds of dollars in labor and, in some cases, materials. Providing you have the basic skills and tools to disassemble, cover and reassemble your furniture piece, repairing and updating the look of your rocker can be a creative and enjoyable experience. Once you have disassembled the piece, you should check the chair's foundation and make any necessary repairs before reupholstering. Depending on the condition of the support materials, you may also want to replace worn-out foam rubber and batting.
  1. Fabric Types

    • Most fabrics for indoor upholstery fall into one of three categories: leather, permeable cloth or vinyl-treated fabric. Your choice of upholstery fabric is a matter of personal preference, however, durability, stain resistance and cost should be considered. Leather, while preferred by many, is expensive and requires periodic treatment to keep it soft and stain-resistant. Vinyl-treated cloth is a less expensive and durable option if you want a non-permeable fabric that resists stains. Upholstery cloth composition, prices and styles vary widely. Popular varieties include: jacquards, damasks, chenilles, brocades, velvets, tapestries, faux suedes solid textures, botanical prints and stripes.

    Quantity

    • To accurately estimate the amount of fabric you need to reupholster the rocking chair, gently remove the fabric, using a screwdriver and needle-nose pliers. Flatten each panel. Tape-off a 54-inch-wide area on the floor, 7 or 8 feet long. The parallel pieces of tape, 54 inches apart, represent the selvages of the upholstery fabric. Arrange the fabric panels between the selvages. Make sure that the fabric pieces are oriented properly to the direction of the fabric. After all of the panels are positioned, measure the length of the area covered by fabric to estimate the yardage needed for the project.

    Sewing

    • Upholstery fabric is typically heavier and stronger than fabric used to make clothing, table linens and garments. If your upholstery project requires sewing, you may need an industrial sewing machine for leather and vinyl-treated fabric. If you are using welt cord to define edges, you will be sewing through four layers of fabric. Most home-sewing machines are not powerful enough to handle multiple layers of leather, vinyl or heavy upholstery cloth.

    • Upholstery fabric, padding materials, trims and fasteners are typically available at fabric and many craft shops. Local and online upholstery-supply stores typically have a greater assortment of fabrics and trims.
