How to Make 2x4 Chairs

Build a basic 2x4 chair for your patio or home office using 2x4-inch boards, which are commonly found in construction applications. They are often used for framing interior walls, building forms for concrete and making basic furniture. These types of boards are the most common type of board to be found in a scrap pile. Build your own chair using 2x4-inch boards in less than an hour spent in a woodshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one 21-inch board flat and vertical. Lay another 21-inch board horizontally on top of it so the ends and edges at the bottom are flush with each other. The boards make an L-shape. Screw the boards together in this position using four screws. Repeat this step.

    • 2

Set a 39-inch board on top of one of the L-shaped pieces that are screwed together so it is parallel with the other board that is on top of the 21-inch board. Its end is aligned with the end of the board that it is parallel with and it's 17 ½ inches away from the board that it is laying on top of. Screw the 39-inch board to the 21-inch board using four screws in this position. These are the sides to your chair.

    • 3

Position the sides upright so the 39-inch boards are aligned and so the two horizontal 21-inch boards are 20 inches apart. Lay six 23-inch boards on top of the two horizontal 21-inch boards and screw them down using four screws for each board. Position the last six 23-inch boards against the pair of 39-inch boards so the ends are flush. Screw them to the 39-inch boards using 4 screws for each board.
