How to Use Wood Filler to Repair Chair Legs

Cracks and chips on your wooden chairs can often be repaired with wood filler and a stain to match the color. The repair is virtually undetectable unless you are up close and actually looking for damage. Wood filler may be the solution if the legs are nicked or cracked, such as from moving from one building to another. You may also be able to repair cosmetic damage to the leg, for example, if the dog used the chair as a chew toy.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the wood filler, which is sold premixed in a can, onto the damaged area with a putty knife. Use a plastic putty knife to avoid scraping the furniture.

    • 2

Work the wood filler into all cracks and crevices before smoothing out the surface with the blade of the putty knife.

    • 3

Wipe away excess wood filler with a rag and allow the wood filler to dry overnight.

    • 4

Sand the repaired surface with increasingly finer grades of sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish.

    • 5

Place the chair on old newspapers spread on the floor or a dropcloth.

    • 6

Apply wood stain with the brush to the repaired area in long, smooth strokes to blend with the surrounding finish. Add stain in the same direction as the wood grain. Allow the stained area to dry overnight before moving the chair.
