Kinds of Wood Chairs

Wood is one of the most common materials used to make furniture because of its attractive, natural appearance, durability and low maintenance. While it is used to make many different types of furniture, wood chairs likely outnumber most other wooden items in your house. In fact, wood is used to make a variety of different kinds of chairs, which serve individual purposes throughout the home.
  1. Dining Chair

    • One of the most common types of wooden chairs is a dining chair. These chairs are designed to be paired with a dining table and come in a variety of styles. However, most styles are armless and feature some type of back support. The seat and backrest may be cushioned and upholstered to provide greater comfort. More elaborate wooden dining chairs may have arms and a high back to give the chair a greater presence at an oversize dining table. Some of the most common styles of wooden dining chairs include Chippendale, Queen Anne, Empire, Windsor and Shaker.

    Rocking Chair

    • Another classic type of wooden chair is a rocking chair, which often conjures up images of summer afternoons and country porches, so it is known for its old-fashioned charm. While there are variations in style among rocking chairs, all models are mounted on curved supports that allow the chairs to rock back and forth. Most rocking chairs have arms and feature either a solid or a slatted back. Some feature a thatched seat and back as well. To make a wooden rocking chair more comfortable, you can purchase cushions for the seat and back supports.

    Adirondack Chair

    • An Adirondack chair is one of most common types of outdoor wooden chairs. It is often used on porches, patios and in yards as a lounge chair. A traditional Adirondack chair features a low seat, slanted back and wide armrests. However, modern versions often have curved seats and backs for a more decorative design. The back of all Adirondack chairs feature slats, though the number of them varies from design to design. The chairs are often painted white or other bright shades, but some are left with their natural wood finish for a more rustic look.

    Folding Chair

    • Folding chairs are a type of wooden chair typically used to provide temporary seating. Because the design allows the chairs to fold flat, they are easy to store, so homeowners often use them for parties and special events when additional seating is required. The rest of the time, you can store them in a basement, attic, garage, closet or even under a bed. Wooden folding chairs vary in style, but the main complaint with wood folding chairs is their lack of comfort. Adding cushions is usually a good idea if you or a guest will be sitting on one for a prolonged period.
