How to Condition Cane-bottom Chairs

Cane is a product of rattan reed and so cane chairs are often called rattan chairs. When a cane-bottom chair is kept in good condition, it can last for decades. However, if the cane is not cared for properly, it sags and becomes stiff and brittle. When cane bottoms start to sag, you'll need to condition them immediately to prevent the cane from breaking and forestall the more costly expense of repairing holes.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Remove dust from crevices using a soft-bristle brush. Dust the chair during your regular housecleaning chores.

    • 2

Clean liquid spills immediately using a damp sponge and soapy water. Cleaning immediately will prevent stains.

    • 3

Wipe the chair weekly with a damp cloth if the chair is subjected to dry and warm temperatures. A damp rubdown prevents drying and cracking.

    • 4

Polish the cane with a furniture polish containing a high content of oil like lemon oil or orange oil. This helps keep the can supple.

    Sagging Cane

    • 5

Flip the chair upside down to expose the bottom of the cane seat. Place the chair in the bathtub or outside for this step.

    • 6

Place a thick bath towel on top of the cane bottom and be sure to cover all the cane.

    • 7

Soak the towel with warm water and allow it to remain on the cane for two to four hours. Check the towel often during this time and keep the towel soaked.

    • 8

Remove the towels and return the chair to its upright position.

    • 9

Allow the chair to dry at least 24 hours before using. During the drying time the cane is shrinking to its original size.
