Ergonomic Desk Chair Guide

Spending hours on end sitting in front of a computer or at a desk is best done in an ergonomic desk chair. Staying seated for extended periods takes a toll on the body, but sitting in an ergonomic chair can lessen the impact. When shopping for an ergonomic chair, remember that no two chairs are alike. The price point will vary anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to over $1,000.
  1. Seat Height

    • A key feature of an ergonomic chair is that the seat height is easy to adjust, usually with a pneumatic adjustment lever. The ideal height from the floor is 16 to 21 inches. This range allows you to comfortably sit with your feet flat on the floor and arms in the right proportion with the height of the desk.

    Seat Width

    • The seat of an ergonomic chair measures between 17 to 20 inches wide. The depth of the seat needs to allow the user to sit and leave approximately 2 to 4 inches between the seat of the chair and the back of the knees. An adjustable seat, either forward or backward tilt, is a typical feature of an ergonomic chair.

    Backrest

    • According to Spine-Health, the backrest of an ergonomic chair is between 12 to 19 inches wide. The backrest should support the natural curve of the spine and give additional support to the lumbar region. If the backrest is combined with the seat, the back rest should be adjustable in back and forward angles to secure a position when the user has found a comfortable angle for the backrest.

    Arm Height Adjustment

    • If multiple individuals will use the chair, then one with adjustable arms is a must-have. They allow for changes in the height and tilt of the arms allowing the user's arms and shoulders to be relaxed and to rest comfortably.
