How to Make Director's Chair Covers Stronger

A director's chair is functional, lightweight and foldable for easy portability. The seat and back are made of fabric, and the frame is wood, metal or plastic. The chair usually has arms. The fabric is sewn in a way that it slides off the chair's frame to be washed or replaced with new fabric if necessary. The fabric must support the sitter's full weight, so it must be strong. If your chair's fabric does not feel sufficiently strong, and you don't wish to change it, there are several steps you can take.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Heavy mesh weave fabric
  • Screwdriver
  • Heavy-duty shears
  • Heavy-duty needle for sewing machine or hand sewing
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Upholstery thread in color of original chair fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the director's chair's seat using a tape measure. Take the measurements to a fabric shop and purchase heavy mesh weave fabric. Choose a color as close to your chair fabric as possible, but it will go under the chair so it isn't crucial that it be exact.

    • 2

Determine how the seat is attached to the rest of the chair to remove it. Use a screwdriver if the seat is being held with screws. Twist the dowels slightly and pull them apart by hand if the seat is held by narrow dowels pushed inside wider ones. Slide the seat fabric off the frame.

    • 3

Use heavy-duty shears to cut the new heavy fabric to the exact size of your measurement. Sew a hem all the way around it using a sewing machine or by hand. Use a heavy-duty needle and upholstery thread. The upholstery thread color should match the old fabric as closely as possible.

    • 4

Lay the old chair fabric face down, so that the underside is facing you. Lay the new fabric on top of it with the hemmed side down so you don't see the raw edges. Use straight pins or baste the two fabrics together. The director's chair seat has stitching along both sides of the fabric. Sew the new fabric to the old with upholstery thread and a heavy duty needle by sewing directly over the current lines of stitching. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand. Remove pins or basting.

    • 5

Remove the back fabric of the director's chair by sliding the material off the frame while the chair is folded so that the fabric fits loosely and is easy to remove. Sew over the old seams of the fabric from the director's chair back using upholstery thread and a heavy duty needle. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand. The back of the chair cannot have new fabric added because it would be visible, but the heavy upholstery thread will give added strength and make it more resilient.

Slide the finished back and seat pieces onto your director's chair frames, being sure that the new heavy fabric on the seat is on the bottom side of the seat piece. Put the seat back into place using the screws you removed and a screwdriver, or by pushing the dowels back together.
